If I had to name the handful of top music and dance camps in
the USA, Ashokan would be high on the list. Thanks to untiring
efforts of Jay Ungar (the composer of the beautiful Ashokan Farewell),
and master musician and singer Molly Mason, this camp continues
as a premier source of instruction and inspiration in many dance
and fiddling traditions. I've been attending off and on since
the early 1980's.
Because of the physical limitations of the beautiful site, and
the immense popularity of the event, the attendence limit is often
reached months before the actual summer sessions start. You need
to contact the camp early, if you'd like to attend! They have
figured out a lottery system which is a fair way to to get into
the camp. If you don't make in a particular year, you get bumped
up to a higher prority on the list for the following year.
I'll gradually add more details to this article as I go along.
