You were wise to refuse the offer; it was a trap. The Office of the Protector of Ancient Traditions was checking whether you were worthy of your office. As a reward you are allowed to have a private tea with the Emperor. During your conversation with the Emperor you mention that the ferryman never gets to meet those he transports until after they are dead. The Emperor is much struck with this and decrees that henceforth the Ferryman, the Emperor, and the Empress shall have tea together annually. When the news of this gets about, your daughter's love is impressed with your new importance as an intimate of the Emperor, and marries her without a great dowry. All is well that ends well.
