The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,
by Washington Irving. Putnam 1899. Miss Armstrong
designed the title page, page borders, endpapers
and cover for this book. In a set with
Rip Van Winkle with the same cover
design. Bound in white and red buckram or
leather. Thematic elements include tulips and, in the endpaper
design shown left, clay pipes and goblets typical of the Dutch influence in
the Hudson River Valley where she spent part of
her childhood. One of her most beautiful books.
