One manifestation of Margaret Armstrong's artistic vision was her ornamental use of distinctive lettering, usually in alphabets and type fonts of her own creation. Notice the serifs in her alphabets( How to Know the Ferns), and the high crossbars in the letters E, H, and F(The Tent on the Beach). The most familiar feature, however, is her preference for a swash-tailed R which is present in almost all her lettering (Italian Backgrounds), (Bracebridge Hall). One of her most exuberantly lettered covers is The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Her spine titles are unfailingly easy to read and are invariably horizontal. In her monogram the letters overlap elegantly.
