TLI One - Apollo 8's TransLunar Injection burn on Dec 21st, 1968, 185 km above the Hawai'ian Islands on Earth's nightside, based on a government photo from the Mauna Kea Observatory that appeared in Science News and other magazines. This is a scan of the painting I commissioned from famed astronomical/Star Trek Next Gen illustrator Rick Sternbach in 1974, asking him to show the same event "from the other side", in high Earth orbit. All reproduction rights reserved. Personal use of one copy is allowed and encouraged by Rick and myself.
We'd like people, especially humans, to remember the greatest voyage of exploration in our lifetimes: Borman, Lovell, and Ander's Christmastime flight around the Moon, humankind's first flight beyond Earth orbit to another world, their deceleration burn into Lunar gravity for ten orbits, and safe return to "the good Earth." Perhaps we as a species will recapture that bold spirit of discovery and one day again voyage beyond the Earth, with your help...
