Southern France But Not Côtes du Rhône     Mar. 8, 2003

Although Côtes du Rhône is the best known appellation in Southern France, many others exist. The major grape variety is grenache; others are carignan, cinsaut, mourvèdre, and syrah. 10 Domaine Mas du Bouquet 2001 Vacqueyras. Mis en bouteille a la propriete. About $10? Philippe & Sydelle got this in France. Very good. Smooth, peppery, not much acid. Maybe best of tasting.
11 Chateau Routas Agrippa $1999 $13 Coteaus Varois. 50% Cabernet, 50% Syrah Lots of tanin, good body. Not much nose. Short finish.
